As part of CYTYC’s long term plans, they decided to create a completely redundant manufacturing site to house all of their manufacturing processes. CYTYC’s objective was to ensure their ability to produce product in CYTYC owned property. Barr & Barr took the lead at the Owner’s request and converted an existing warehouse space, attached to the existing Londonderry production facilities, into a completely redundant manufacturing site.
This converted warehouse now contains duplicate manufacturing lines and process equipment and is prepared to run as a standalone production facility in the event that CYTYC looses one of their other production sites.
Housed in the Redundant Manufacturing Site (RMS) are Class 1000 clean room Solutions Manufacturing spaces, Class 1 Div. 1 explosion proof methanol blending rooms, raw material and finished goods storage spaces conditioned to meet existing FDA requirements.
Key pieces of the project scope were:
- Erect a new 2500 square foot mezzanine within the existing warehouse to house all the new facility's mechanical equipment.
- Construct a 35 foot tall, double wythe block fire separation wall. The intent was to completely separate the two
manufacturing spaces with this type of wall.
- Construct two explosion proof rooms with 12 inch thick cast in place concrete walls and ceilings, and explosion
venting wall panel system.
- Redundant main electric, emergency electric, water, gas, phone, and fire protection systems.
