This 185,000 square foot project involved creating a state of the art research and laboratory facility with services and floor loads to
accommodate the requirements of TKT. The project included renovating approximately 135,000 square feet of building façade, while
maintaining the historical features as originally intended nearly 150 years ago. Five-thousand square feet of this area is currently used
as an animal surgery and holding facility.
Barr & Barr constructed an addition of nearly 50,000 square feet using modern materials to
compliment the historical element. The combination of “old and new” materials maintains the historical theme common in Cambridge
while introducing a high tech element.
While restoring the masonry façade, Barr & Barr constructed a new steel framed structure within the existing exterior walls. The new roof
on the building accommodates the acoustical requirements of TKT and is structurally sound to support the various mechanical units
and equipment required for a research and laboratory facility.
This project also involved replacement of onsite utilities and parking surfaces. The landscaping theme incorporates both green space
and an architecturally pleasing courtyard. |
