The Colonial Theatre was designed by JMA Vance and constructed at the turn
of the Century (1900) and remained operational as a Theatre until approximately
1950. It remained dormant for many years until it was converted into an art
supply store. A group of local business people purchased the building several
years ago and have been raising funds in order to refurbish the theatre. Barr &
Barr was brought on during the schematic design period to provide
preconstruction services and ultimately construction management services.
The
project essentially is a complete gut of the existing theatre with new structural
and mechanical systems. Many architectural features, however, must either be
preserved or reproduced to restore the theatre top its 1903 state. Additionally,
numerous upgrades to meet current building codes and ADA requirements are
being made. This is necessary because the building is on the national historic
register and is being partially financed by historical restoration grants.
The
footprint of the theatre is approximately 7,300 SF including the multiple floor
the total square footage is approximately 23,000.
Additionally, the Colonial Theatre associated purchased an old car dealership
/ ware house building adjacent to the Colonial Theatre which will be also
renovated to house the main lobby, bathrooms and much of the back of house
functions. This building will provide approximately 30,000 sf of additional space. |
