Following an extensive evaluation of their existing facilities, Middlebury College elected to construct a new science center, Bicentennial Hall. Bicentennial Hall is intended to house programs for biology, chemistry, geography, geology, psychology and physics. The facility also contains an expanded science library and provides additional classrooms for the language school program.
This project consisted of six floors of laboratories, offices, library and classroom spaces in addition to a rooftop observation, greenhouse and a basement mechanical space. The overall square footage is approximately 215,000.
Unique aspects of the project included: an aggressive schedule with construction beginning in May 1997 and completing in September 1999; location of the building on a western facing ridgeline requiring extensive blasting and excavation; a 2,200 linear foot road extension to serve the facility; and, a 100 car parking lot expandable to 200 cars.
As Construction Manager for the overall project, Barr & Barr facilitated all input from the various departments within the College and coordinated the efforts of the architects and engineers as well as reviewing agencies. Barr & Barr’s continuous involvement throughout conceptual design, schematic design and design development enabled this project to be completed on schedule and within the Owner’s budget.
