A new, 114,000 SF, 7–story building built over the FDR Drive and constructed partially from barges in the East River, consisting of 5 floors of M/S beds, 1 floor of Radiology and 1 floor for parking. Also included in this project as part of the Hospital’s Major Modernization Program were major alterations of the OR Suite, Rehab, Radiology, Doctor's Offices, Out–Patient Clinic and Day Surgery.

By utilizing air rights over the FDR drive in Manhattan, HSS was able to undertake a major expansion of their facility. The challenge to build a new 7 story structure and at the same time, keep a major traffic artery open, was daunting with the use of barges, cranes erecting from the East River that the timing of tides was crucial.

Since its founding, the hospital for Special Surgery has continuously expanded to meet the quality health care needs of the metropolitan New York area.
